Here in Louisiana, we have a tradition of giving something extra with a purchase, something free like a piece of candy, or like a snack or a little piece of cake only 1 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inch square. It's called Lagniappe (lahn-yahp) Lagniappe is French spelling. It derives from the spanish (castellano) word la ñapa (Louisiana Isleños still say la ñapa when speaking spanish/castellano though). It means to give a little something extra or a little something free with your purchase. But even this is not as common as it was in my parents youth, when it came with everything you bought, every time you bought something.

The same here. Sometimes it is done in here, usually in small business, which we call "tiendas".

When I go to my fruit shop, the guy there gives me a sort of gift at the end of the purchase --hierbabuena, perejil...--, the same at the butchery, the butcher gives me usually something as a gift in the end of the purchase --half dozen eggs, zurrapa &c &c.

But this costum is disappearing in the big marts, just in the "tiendas", usually a familiar business.

I think that none of those from the poll exist in Poland, except for Aldi.

Fred Meyer. It got bought out by Kroger but the name remains. Basically it's a one-stop shopping kind of place that originated in Oregon but is also found in Washington and Alaska.

Publix. They are clean, organized, have great deli and bakeries and frequently have things I buy on BOGO sales.

Yes, it's disappearing here too in big businesses. It still survives as part of the culture, but is not as common in businesses around here as it once was. It is still done in restaurants and small family businesses like stores and bakeries, where you may get an extra baked good with your purchase, or something extra you did not order for dinner, but it was once everywhere around here, in everything. This is certainly an old custom.
