"Un prophète" is a good one, most of the action take place in jail so not sur if it's fit in the gangster movie category.

I never watch them right now, but I will. The "pusher" trilogy is always on the top of gangster movies.

"La french" and "Mesrine" are also good french movies.

Goodfellas because it is the most realistic. Least realistic would be fillms like The Godfather. How do I know ? I am from Hell's Kitchen Manhattan -- enough said.

Scarface is clearly overestimated and not that amazing but the movie is worth watching for that scene

oh i watched the first i was disappointed
i expected some special forces incursion , some bombs here and there , some rifles etc
and instead it was just about the immigrant mafia chitchatting in prison

i totally misunderstood the topic of the film and i ended up with being disappointed lol

Un Prophète is a masterpiece of the genre, I am outraged. Do me a favor & re-watch it, ASAP

I recommand you "Polisse" by Maiwenn, another great French film about a police unit specialized in crimes related to children, I think you might find it interesting.

I really liked Un Prophète, and also both movies about Mesrine.

The 70s / 80s ambientation reminded me a lot the miniseries Carlos (the most famous terrorist of those years)
