there are hadiths which says if you own a dog the angels wont come to visit you .
and other which says that you can only own a dog as a guard for your home or your cattle.
other hadiths say that you cant keep dogs in urbanized areas but only in isolated areas
anyway each muslim has a different thought about this matter. some even own dogs with the excuse they re guardians .
but this doesn't mean that animal abuse towards dogs is islamically justified , indeed there is an hadith about a prostitute who gave water to a thirsty dog and took care of him . because of such action she was granted a place in paradise , in Islamic mythology, despite her profession.
some muslims can argue that adopting a dog from a shelter is basically doing the same thing that this prostitute supposedly did . so you have muslims owning dogs for this other reason too.
few months ago i was in a shop with an hijabi woman , i asked her if i could come close because i was bringing my dog with me and she was far from fearful or disgusted by my dog , she said she had no problem with it .
with muslims you cant generalize . they go from wahabism to Sufism ..
