How fast did Italian heritage become part of Brazilian culture?

Recently I met some girls with Italian surnames and I asked them bout their ancestry and they didnt know they are Italian descents. Having Italian ancestry become something common here that most people dont care. Another friend has Spanish heritage but also didnt know, I assume most Brazilians dont care about ethnicity.
