One person was killed and three seriously injured when a gunman burst into a packed nightclub in southern Germany and opened fire with a machine-gun in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The gunman was later killed in a shoot-out with police. The 34-year-old, who has not been named, was originally from Iraq.
Police said his motives remain unclear but according to unconfirmed local reports the attack is not thought to have had terrorist motives.
The gunman was previously known to police and the investigation is said to be focusing on the theory the attack was linked to a troubled personal relationship.
The incident took place at around 4.30am local time (3.30am BST) at the Grey nightclub in the city of Constance, on Lake Constance close to the Swiss border.
Witnesses described the gunman bursting into the nightclub and opening fire “indiscriminately” with a machine-gun.
“The place was packed, I guess there were several hundred people there,” an unnamed witness told German television.
“Club-goers saved themselves by escaping outside or hiding,” a police spokesman said.

The attack lasted several minutes. Police special forces rushed to the scene, and exchanged fire with the gunman as he attempted to leave the club.
The attacker was hit by a police bullet and later died of his injuries in hospital. One police officer was shot but was saved from serious injury by a protective vest.
Several witnesses described seeing a second attacker at the scene, but police are said to believe the gunman acted alone.
He was reportedly seen in the nightclub earlier in the evening, in an argument with some else. He left the building and later returned with a gun and opened fire.
Although the gunman was originally from Iraq he was not an asylum-seeker and had been living in Germany for a long time, according to police.
The incident follows a multiple stabbing at a supermarket in Hamburg on Friday that is thought to have had terror links.
One person was killed and six injured when a rejected Palestinian asylum-seeker attacked several people with a knife. He was known to police for Islamic extremist views, and witnesses described him shouting “Allahu akbar” during the attack.
