Have you ever worked in manufacturing? I have. It isn't simply physical demands. They want employees that will regularly show up on time, take few sick leaves, and do the job efficiently. Also need to pay attention to quality, minor troubleshooting, and having talent with tools helps a lot.
You look at an application for such a job.. and they always mention working "in a fast paced environment". Believe it or not, reliability is a legitimate concern that employers have of their new hires.
So I guess a protip on getting a first job, lady: Give a good impression that you'll show up every work day on time and put some effort into your work.
As for the low pay... here in the US, they normally pay much better than retail work. If they don't, it's pretty much a guarantee that Spanish is the majority of the spoken language there.
