Many of the Spanish colonists on Hispaniola itself were scornfull toward Columbus' (and his brother's) tyranical rule, by the way. And he also resorted to brutal methods that remind me of those of Congo Freestate under Leopold II at the hands of the Force Publique (local irregulars under commander-ship of inept Europeans). Tainos who didn't meet the quota of resources provided got their hands amputated in other words.

The Spanish rulers back home could do nothing about atrocities like these and others in the Americas. Anyway, cruel brutal man or not, I believe his statue should remain. You can't erase history just like that. Even Lenin statues should remain intact for that matter. Educated adults can handle this without getting emotional over them.
