In Indo-european Iranian folk mythology, there are contacts and conflicts with the "danawo" peoples in the west resulting in the Iranians not being able to spread more west than armenia. Before the Greeks adopted their current ethnic name "Hellenes" they were called "Danaoi" and written exactly as described in Iranian mythology. That is how we know that there were indigenous Greek tribes inhabiting the areas near Armenia and Pontus. The Descent of the Myriads by Xenophon is also a clue that, apart from colonizers from the mainland, there were indigenous ancient Greek tribes there.
