I would say dogs are pretty pathetic. Requiring constant care, being a mentally stunted version of wolves, being stupid in assessing danger, eating its own shit. Rats are disgusting but not pathetic. A mammal belonging to the rodent family (most successful of all land vertebrates, only surpassed by passerine birds) can not be considered pathetic by any extent. Rats are the second most numerous mammal on the planet after humans.
Rodents are also closely related to Primates. Rats form social complex structures, will help unrelated rats if they are in trouble (no other animal does that besides humans), can survive radiation, and a few of them can even regrow limbs. Their adaptability is unmatched among mammals.

No animals are pathetic, just because some are herbivorous and not predatory doesn't make them pathetic.
I consider carnivorous mountain lions which I've encountered in my neighborhood to be truly pathetic since they attack deers and dogs. But I consider humans poachers and people cruel to animals to be the ultimate pathetic mammals.

Pandas in captivity have a difficult time completing the mating process, as the environment seems to remove their desire to mate. Some researchers have attempted to give males Viagra and show them movies of pandas mating to increase their motivation.
