I dunno, if I already posted in this thread but I am not going to go through the trouble of finding out, so :

I've been mistaken for Scottish , British (I guess English) and WASP (White Anglo-Saxon protestant). Yes, I have brown hair and eyes but so do a significant minority of people in NorthWest Europe as NorthWest Europe is not Scandinavia.

I have an Anglicized Irish Hiberno Norman surname and anglicized Irish first name but I have never been mistaken for Irish. I had two people ask me if I was Irish probably because of my name but if you want to count that as being mistaken for 'Irish' then you can count that too. Oh, yeah , wait, one dude told an Italian American I was 'Irish ' and the Italian American said back in disbelief "He is Irish !?".

Since I made this post, from the back of my head, I've been mistaken for:

Russophone by every second street vendor in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria who didn't even bother addressing me in English as with other customers
Polish by every other English person in UK
French by Swiss French in Switzerland
French by French tourists in Bulgaria
French by Flemish tourists in Bulgaria
Bulgarian in Burgas, Bulgaria
Ukrainian in Chernivtsi, Ukraine


I don't know how some users here manage to guess me correctly as Romanian, when IRL Romanians never speak to me in Romanian when abroad and are surprised to learn that I'm also one, as I always like to brag about that.
The only time that I've been correctly identified as Romanian abroad and it almost made me a bit sentimental was when an old grandpa from R. Moldova approached me at the airport to ask for the gate on our flight to Chisinau.

From my own personal experience, I think it's bc many if not most ppl look completely different in pics vs irl. I think that's what makes people guess differently by pic vs by seeing you face to face.

Bc it also happens to me lol, online many ppl knew right away I was Hungarian or Romanian, but NOBODY irl ever even thinks about those possibilities. Even Romanians here don't realize I am one of them. Weirdly enough, when they see my mom they know she is Romanian right away and start talking.

Ever been to Europe? Most native people in Scandinavia have brown hair. Blonde is more common in ladies, because they dye their natural hair.

No, I'm only 6'3 but I'm well built like someone who's been in the army and people often associate that with east slavs. In my case it's a combination of facial features and even more facial expressions, physique,mannerisms, clothes.

In Israel at the Ben Gurion Airport I was subjected to a random check by two israeli officers. The girl had origins somewhere in the West, the guy had origins in the former SU. The girl was trying to scan my passport but couldn't and asked me in english to remove the cover but I didn't react so the guy tells me the same thing but in russian. She tells him that I do not speak russian and he replies to her - yes he does, looks at me and says "ne tak li?". My passport or my name couldn't have been an indication.
