There's two cities named London within London (each with their own separate mayor.)
Founded by the Romans,
the corporation that runs
the historic City of London (CoL) is far older
than the United Kingdom
and the British Empire,
and acts like its own country within the U.K.
The long list of 700+ mayors who've governed the the City of London
dates back to over 1000 years.
The City of London (aka 'The Square Mile' and 'The City') is located
next to the City of Westminster within Central London,
and holds the world's largest financial district.
The City of London has its own separate crest and its own separate flag,
its own separate police force (City of London police)
to the rest of London (Metropolitan police,)
own separate laws, separate taxes,
its own unique voting system
which involves medieval guilds and large companies,
and has its own separate mayor -
who is given an honourable title and rides in a golden carriage,
unlike the mayor for the rest of London.
The Mayor of London has no power over the City of London
which is governed separately by the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of London.
The Queen has to gain formal permission from the Lord Mayor of London
during a ceremony,
before she is allowed to enter the City of London
which is surrounded by statues of dragons on the street corners.
