According to a few research I have done it appeared in written traces in Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth in about the 14th century but not entirely sure.
Quite rare, today it can be found in Russia, France, USA and perhaps in Poland.

My surname is Lithuanian, it has undergone 'Polonisation' but many Lithuanians have my surname. It's normal in Baltic states, root word is Bernat (Bernhard)

The name itself is derived from an animal that got it's name mostly everywhere from Latin, but the only countries that made it a family name are the Slavs. Mine is a Romanian version of it.
