Google withdraws use of cupcake emoji as critics call it body-shaming

In a story that really should be filed in “things you can’t make up,” Google Inc. has caved to pressure and withdrawn the use of an cupcake emoji after people complained that it was “triggering” them into eating the pastries and “fat shaming” them.

The evil, horrible, oh-so-bad, world-ending cupcake emoji in question arrived as a feature in a new iOS version of Google Maps that functioned as a fitness tracker. Google, for what sane people would consider to be cute, used the cupcake emoji along with terms that stated things such as “you’ve burned 125 calories – that’s more than 1 mini cupcake!”

Apparently daring to compare burning off calories to the consumption of innocuous, cute cupcakes is cancerous in 2017, with social justice warriors going off their politically correct trees. Some slammed Google for daring to use the cupcake emoji because it was “patronizing, promoting body-shaming and possibly triggering unhealthy behavior in people who have struggled with eating disorders or over-exercise,” according to a report from the BBC.

Because this story can’t be anymore possibly absurd than it already is, the report noted that “the pink cupcake calorie counter was also lambasted as being unscientific.”

One user on Twitter claimed that the use of the mini-cupcake emoji was “extremely triggering” for “ppl [sic] who have had eating disorders” and is also “generally shamey [sic]”, whatever that’s supposed to mean.

Google, often alleged to have a left-wing political bias, didn’t want to upset millennials in their safe spaces and announced that it would be removing the cupcake emoji, citing “strong user feedback.”

As it turns out, Wednesday is National Chocolate Cupcake Day in the U.S. Those who are easily triggered should not click on this link because it contains pictures of beautiful, delectable cupcakes.
