Roman thermae of Forum Traiani, central Sardinia

The Roman colony of Forum Traiani was the HQ of the Roman military power in Sardinia, through the whole Roman age Sardinia was an unruly province, and a full legion was always stationed in Forum Traiani to guard the Roman territory from the attacks of the free tribes who lived on the mountains, out of the Roman control. The thermae were built during in IInd century A.D. when the city increased in importance, and was renamed from Aquae Hypsitanae to Forum Traiani to honour the emperor. The thermae have a still working water system, and the pools are always full of hot water from a nearby hot spring (54°C), until the eighties the women of the nearby village of Fordongianus went habitually to the thermae to wash the clothes.

facts : The name of the village of Fordongianus is a distortion of the medieval name "Fordonianum" which is also a distortion the Roman name "Forum Traiani"
