Lima, Peru, 1991. Canto Grande prison, which had been practically taken over by terrorist group Shining Path.

Ayacucho, Peru, 1980. In the early days of Shining Path's war as it gets cruder, this picture is from an assault to a police station, the only thing which remained untouched was the portrait of the president, then Fernando Belaunde Terry. This picture portrayed quite well the imminent crumbling of our still weak democratic regime...

It was not uncommon in those days to find in very important National Universities paintings supporting Shining Path, and many terrorists infiltrated in them trying to promote their ideology. In the picture, a classroom of the National University of San Marcos, the oldest in the Americas and the best state university in Peru, in the early 90's.

The leader of Shining Path, Abimael Guzmán, is captured in September of 1992, after about 70 000 people had lost their lives since the beginning of the conflict he started, and the whole apparatus of Shining Path crumbled with him. To this day, he doesn't regret one single thing he did. He is serving a lifetime sentence in jail, as well as his wife. He was found hiding in an house of a middle-upper class district of Lima. Had he not been captured soon enough then, he would have probably overthrown the government... I don't even want to imagine.
