There are even right-wing economists like Thomas Sowell who claim that the so-called pay gap is solely due to marriage. And he backs this up by going all the way to the 20s and 40s in the US. He finds that women who were never married, made as much as men of any kind, married or otherwise. In fact, I think for PhDs and professors, women who were never married with PhDs made more on average than men with PhDs.
The key word is "never married" though. Divorced women are just as worse off as married women -- financially at least.
So it doesn't seem that marriage makes sense for women who want careers and financial success above all. Some women do all of those things - family, career, financial success, etc - so clearly, it is possible to do everything. But on average, if we're talking about trends, it's probably right to say that if u want to be a mother, your career will suffer a bit (and if you're a dude, your career will likely be boosted if you get married)
Maybe traditional morals and conventions (go to college, get a job, get married, have kids -- that kind of sequence) really is just too male-centric.
