No, he wasn't. Petőfi never professed to be anything but Hungarian, he wrote in Hungarian and gave his life for Hungarian freedom, like did many others of German, Slovak, Armenian or Jewish ancestry. You fight for this country, whether your contributions are martial or intellectual, you are a Hungarian period.
Irrelevant to the matter at hand, but Petőfi's parents are registered as belonging to the Lutheran confession, whereas Serb identity is strongly tied to Orthodoxy.
