I think because the government had spent so much money on building stadiums and all that rather than spending the money on helping people getting out of poverty and all that for the world cup. I also think that many of the criminals from other regions of Brazil ran to places like Rio ever since the government sends its army against them. It's a damn shame because Brazil is a very beautiful country with some of the most richest cultures in the world. Do hope that someday the country would turn for the better in the future.

There were several factors that led to this giant economic crisis. Lower commodity prices, corruption scandals, lower trust for foreign investors, Chinese economic slow down, political turmoil, etc. It all came crashing down at once for Brazil. That's why the economy went from a recession to a depression. Add to that the fact Brazil is a very unequal country and you have a recipe for disaster in terms of increased poverty and decreased public safety. Brazil is coming back however. The country will not grow at 5% a year as it once did for at least 1 to 1.5 decades, but at least I think the economy will be growing faster than the population again in a few years.
