It's a damn shame because Brazil is a very beautiful country with some of the most richest cultures in the world. Do hope that someday the country would turn for the better in the future.
There were several factors that led to this giant economic crisis. Lower commodity prices, corruption scandals, lower trust for foreign investors, Chinese economic slow down, political turmoil, etc. It all came crashing down at once for Brazil. That's why the economy went from a recession to a depression. Add to that the fact Brazil is a very unequal country and you have a recipe for disaster in terms of increased poverty and decreased public safety. Brazil is coming back however. The country will not grow at 5% a year as it once did for at least 1 to 1.5 decades, but at least I think the economy will be growing faster than the population again in a few years.

It may have got worse, but Brazil has been known for its violent crime since I can remember. I even vividly remember talking to a guy in 2006 who practiced capoeira about tourists getting targeted for violent robberies every year they visit the carnival of Rio. Also the film Cidade de Deus is set during the '70s.
