Britain's most workshy estate: The community where this man is the only person has a job

Pride: James Beards, 33, is believed to be the only Cottsmeadow Estate resident who works full-time

Britain’s worst benefits blackspot has been revealed – an area where just one person works for a living.

The rundown Cottsmeadow Estate in Washwood Heath, Birmingham tops a table of workshy communities.

Official figures show that 99.1 per cent of working-age adults there live off state handouts.

Among 105 people who could hold jobs, forklift truck driver James Beards is believed to be the only resident who is in full-time employment.
‘I’d never dream of claiming benefits,’ he told the News of the World.
‘It annoys me that I work hard to make a living and other people can just live for free off the state.’

Figures from the Department for Work and Pensions reveal that among residents, 50 are listed as on the dole, 30 are signed off sick and get incapacity benefits, 20 pocket lone-parent payments and five claim other handouts.

The Cottsmeadow Estate is one of five communities where more than 90 per cent of adults are on some form of benefits.

The Egerton Street area of Oldham, where 110 out of 113 (or 97.3 per cent) of residents claim state benefits, was second on the list.

Sandhills in Liverpool was third, with a 95.5 per cent jobless tally.
The Westport Road area of Burslem South in Stoke-on-Trent came next with 94.2 per cent of residents on benefits while Whalley Banks in Blackburn, scored 92.9 per cent and came fifth.

The shock statistics are based on the number claiming benefits in the second quarter of 2010, and the latest population estimates for neighbourhoods of more than 100 people.

Some Cottsmeadow residents who have jobs may have been left out by mistake, or have moved in at a later date.

The analysis aimed to exclude areas containing health or rehabilitation units.
The Government statistics will heap further pressure on ministers to stamp out the something-for-nothing culture that spiralled under Labour.

Last month, the Daily Mail revealed that 1.5million people spent their fifth Christmas on incapacity handouts.

The long-term claimants are part of a failed system which has seen taxpayers shelling out £66billion – £1,000 for every person in the UK – every year since 2005.

Official figures had previously shown that two million long-term sick-pay claimants were well enough to work as were almost eight in every ten of those applying for incapacity benefit, worth up to £91.40 a week.

The findings will dismay millions of taxpayers whose contribute more than £13billion a year to pay for the 2.6million people claiming incapacity benefit.
Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan-Smith has launched a bid to cut down the numbers claiming benefits be reassessing their status.

(It also lists a list of benefit blackspots)

I find it hard to believe the only reason for such a high percentage is lazyness.

    Demographics of Washwood Heath

According to the 2001 Population Census, there were 27,822 people living in the ward with a population density of 5,335 people per km² compared with 3,649 people per km² for Birmingham. The area is 5.2 km². Washwood Heath is an ethnically diverse community with 57% (15,863) of the ward's population being of an ethnic minority compared with 29.6% for Birmingham. It had been a major Irish community, however, in more recent times has become a large Asian community along with nearby Alum Rock and Small Heath.
    Hmmm.

    Spoiler!

The Westport Road area of Burslem South in Stoke-on-Trent came next with 94.2 per cent
Burslem has a very large Pakistani population, in some areas I'd say they predominate.

There are problems but they don't help themselves. If you walk through a Chav estate in the UK you realise many of the people are incredibly lazy, don't help themselves and don't even look after the houses they live in (Usual Chav traits).
The word "Chav" is even supposedly Romani, a gypsy word for "Child", now if the Romani call such people "Childish" if you like then it doesn't say much for people labelled with such a term.
