I think it's all because as human beings, we wanna be marginalized.. so naturally, we want to look different from the majority of our specific area.. At least, I feel that's the biggest reason why. It just so happens that a massive amount of this forum are West Asian or Balkan. Also a lot of this forum isn't living in what I or any sane person would call "first world beauty", so they gravitate towards the look associated with it to cope.

Simply because of in-group preference.
We want to have a group we can belong to. In europe people made these groups over time by who spoke what language.
In america people build this in-group and out-group mentality around the concept if they are european, mestizo, black or else.
This american concept has just expanded over the rest of the world due to globalization.
Which leads to the recent phenomenon of "white nationalism", instead of say "dutch nationalism in america" or say "ghana nationalism in america".

I think it's more the desire to fit in than to stand out. Since the west is the common denominator via emigration they are the gold standard. I doubt in their respective countries they would care.
