Maltese, Ashkenazim, and Sicilians are all very close. Maltese did not gain their Semitic language independently. When Malta was settled from Sicily, Malta was considered part of Sicily, no different than say, Messina or Ragusa is today. Maltese are transplants from Agrigento and Caltanissetta and there is no genetic difference between them today.
