I'm an atheist but I love History of Religions. I'm currently reading "L'invention de Dieu" by Thomas Römer.
I think that Religions were created by fear. If there weren't fear, stress, death, diseases, Religions would have never existed.
However, I'm astonished by the lack of knowledge about Islam in Europe and in Spain more specifically as I've spent, a few years ago, about a year in Spain and discussed with several Spaniards about the topic.
Lets summarize the very vague conception of Islam many Spaniards have :
*Muslims don't worship the Christian God but another deity called Mahoma
*Muslims don't even know that Jesus has existed as it's merely a Christian "character"
*The same could be said about Adam and Eve, Noah and the Flood, Abraham and his sons, Joseph and his brothers, Moses, Aaron and Pharaoh, David and Solomon, Jonas and all the other Biblical myths.
They strangely consider Islam as distinct from Christianity than could be Buddhism or Hinduism.
They don't realize that common names among Muslims as Brahim, Ismael, Youssef, Younes, Ayoub, Zakaria or Meriem are just the equivalents of Abraham, Ismael, Joseph, Jonas, Job, Zacharias and Mary...
I remember a Spanish girl asking why a Moroccan friend of her wrote "Gracias a Dios", thinking that he was using a "Christian expression".
I already have some answers to my questions, but I would like to get yours.
Last but not least : please, let's focus upon the topic and avoid xenophobic statements. Thank you.
