Tracking Norman lineage can be tricky, because after the Norman conquest of England, much of the existing Anglo-Saxon aristocracy took Norman surnames.

That's not true, I'm afraid. In the whole of England, only two English landowners survived, Thorkell of Warwick and Colswein of Lincoln. As an interesting aside, Shakespeare was descended from the former, and Cromwell from the latter.

I question. My fatherly grandma and my great grandmother are from a Norman family that settled in Southern Italy. How Norman am I?
