Cetate este un termen general care definește o construcție înconjurată de ziduri cu rol de apărare. Spre deosebire de termenul de castel, care are un sens strict de reșediță nobiliară rurală, termenul de cetate are un sens stict marcat militar, dar foarte larg din punctul de vedere al formelor arhitecturale: în română, cetate poate însemna orice formă de fortificație, de la simplu donjon la localitate medievală înconjurată de ziduri de apărare până la redute și la structuri defensive de tip Vauban. Cetățile au jucat un rol militar important din perioada antică până în secolul al XVIII-lea.

Citadel is a general term that defines a construction surrounded by walls. Unlike the term castle, which has strictly the meaning of rural noble residence, the term citadel has a marked military meaning, but very broad in terms of architectural form: in Romanian, citadel can mean any type of fortification, from a simple keep to a medieval settlement surrounded by walls and to redoubts and Vauban type defensive structures. Citadels have played an important defensive role from the antiquity up until the 18th century.

În mijlocul orașului Aiud se păstrează una din cele mai vechi cetăți urbane din Transilvania (sec.XIII-XVI), Cetatea Aiudului.

One of the oldest citadels in Transylvania (13-14th century) is preserved in the middle of Aiud town.

Cetatea bastionara din Alba Iulia a fost ridicata între anii 1714-1738, fiind considerata cea mai reprezentativa fortificatie bastionara de tip Vauban din tara noastra. Planul cetatii a fost întocmit de arhitectul italian Giovanni Morando Visconti, sub conducerea generalului Stefan de Steinville, completata apoi de generalul Weiss.

The bulwark fortress of Alba Iulia has been set up between 1714 and 1738 and it is considered to be the most representative of Vauban type in Romania. The fortress was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti.

Cetatea Aradului este una din fortificațiile din Transilvania construite în stil Vauban, în a doua jumătate a secolului al XVIII-lea, fază târzie a sistemului de fortificații stelate din Europa.

The fortified town of Arad is one of the most important historical monuments existing in the West Side of the country. Built in the second half of the 17th century, the fortification was considered to be a very important military building.

Pal, fiul lui Ecs, a construit Cetatea Adrian la începutul secolului al XIII-lea. Această cetate a fost, pâna în secolul al XV-lea, cetatea „nobililor rebeli”.

Pal, son of Ecs, built the Adrian citadel at the beginning of the 13th century. Until the 15th century, this citadel was the rebel nobles’ citadel.

Cetatea Almașului de lângă satul Almașu, Sălaj, a fost construită între anii 1247-1278, ca una dintre cele mai vechi și mai puternice cetăți medievale din Transilvania.

The Almaș citadel, near the Almaș village, Sălaj County, was built between 1247 and 1278 as one of the oldest and strongest citadels in Transylvania.

Cetatea Bistriței datează din secolul XIII, fiind reclădită în perioada secolelor XV-XVI. În anul 1465 cetatea avea 18 turnuri și bastioane aparate de meștesugarii orașului grupati în bresle. Fiecare breslă avea în grijă un turn de apărare. În această perioadă Bistrița devine unul din cele mai importante orașe din Transilvania alaturi de Brașov, Sighișoara și Sibiu.

Din cetate au mai rămas unele bucăți din zid pe strada Dogarilor și în Piața Unirii. Deasemenea a rămas în picioare unul din turnurile de apărare, Turnul Dogarilor.Pe lângă acestea a rămas și Biserica Evanghelică cu un turn înalt de 75 m.

The Bistrița citadel dates from the 13th century and was rebuilt in the 15-16th centuries. In 1465 the citadel has 18 towers and keeps defended by the town’s craftsmen organized in guilds. Each guild had to take care of their tower. In this period Bistrița became one of the most important towns in Transylvania, along with Brațov, Sighișoara and Sibiu.

Parts of the citadel walls can still be found on the Dogarilor street and in Union Square. Also, one of the defence towers is still standing, Coopers’ Tower. Besides these, the Evangelical Church, with a tower of 75 m, has also remained.

La mai putin de o ora de mers de la Cluj, ai langa Huedin o cetate ca-n romanele lui Jules Verne. Sufocata de vegetatia salbatica si ignorata de majoritatea romanilor, cetatea Bologa sta cocotata si astazi pe o culme greu accesibila, de unde poti cuprinde cu privirea vaile inconjuratoare. Greu de crezut privind zidurile acoperite de iedera, insa Bologa e una dintre acele cetati care chiar au simtit ce inseamna razboiul.

At less than an hour away from Cluj, you can find close to Huedin a citadel like in Jules Verne’s novels. Suffocated by wild vegetation and ignored by most Romanians, the Bologa citadel sits perched to this day on a hard to reach peak, from where you can see the whole of the surrounding valley. It’s hard to believe looking at the ivy-covered walls, but Bologa is one of those citadels have really felt what war means.

Cetatea medievală reprezintă cel mai valoros edificiu istoric și, totodată, marca distinctivă a satului Câlnic. Datorită păstrării sale în bune condiții, in mijlocul unei localități purtând până azi amprenta civilizației coloniștilor germani stabiliți in Transilvania, situl a fost înscris în Lista Patrimoniului Mondial UNESCO (1999).

The medieval citadel represents the most valuable historical edifice and, also, a distinctive brand of the Câlnic village. Thanks to its preservation in good condition, in the middle of a locality that bears to this day the mark of the German colonists settled in Transylvania, the site was registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1999.

Capidava a fost un centru fortificat geto-dac, apoi cetate romană, pe malul drept al Dunării dobrogene, pe locul unde se află astăzi satul cu același nume Capidava.

În timpul Imperiului Roman a avut un rol important pe linia de apărare a Dunării.

Distrusă de goți în secolul III, fortificația a fost refăcută în secolul următor, devenind apoi și centru episcopal. Izvoarele din secolele IV – VI atestă o unitate de cavalerie - Cuneus equitum Solensium - și unitățile de equites scutarii și vexillatio Capidavensium. Fortul a fost părăsit după invazia cutrigurilor (559).

După retragerea oficială romano-bizantină din Dobrogea (circa 600), cetatea a fost reclădită de bizantini în secolul X, adăpostind de asemenea și populația băștinașă. Incendiul provocat de pecenegi în 1036 a dus la abandonarea definitivă a acesteia.

Capidava was a fortified Geto-Dacian centre, then a Roman citadel, on the right bank of the Lower Danube, in the same spot as the village with the same name.

During the Roman Empire it had an important role in the defence of the Danube.

Destroyed by the Goths in the 3rd century, the fortification was rebuilt in the next century, later becoming an episcopal centre. The 4-6th century sources reveal the presence of a cavalry unit - Cuneus equitum Solensium – and equites scutarii and vexillatio Capidavensium units. The fort was abandoned after the invasion of the Kutrigurs (559).

After the official Roman-Byzantine retreat from Dobrogea (cca. 600), the citadel was rebuilt by the Byzantines in the 10th century, also sheltering the indigenous population. The fire started by the Pechenegs in 1036 led to its definitive abandonment.
