here's a less intelligent example:
I own the first edition,
but the covers are just hilarious. I want to collect them.
as i recall,
dune was so unremarkable when first published
that no one was surprised
when - after over a dozen rejections -
it was, finally, released through an automobile-repair-manual publisher.
the author does deserve credit for persistence.
he was fortunate to have caught a wave.
in contrast,
norman spinrad had no such issues with the iron dream:
the publisher was thrilled at the opportunity
to release the layered and challenging novel
by a successfull and versatile author.
i have read that*

and readers eagerly await the rest of the series:
