SS General by Sven Hassel.

It's part of a series of books on the author's experiences during World War II, presented in novel format. I couldn't find any of the preceding titles, but I've heard that each is effectively stand-alone anyway.

Is anyone familiar with Hassel's work? There seems to be a lot of criticism of his claims floating around the internet. The official story is that he was a Danish volunteer in the Wehrmacht, but an investigative journalist claims Hassel is writing under a false identity, and was actually a low-level Nazi collaborator who never saw combat with German forces.

I've read only "Legion of the Damned". Some of the stories, such as the escape from Russian capture seemed a bit imagined.
