What little I know of the Crusades is that they're largely the result of Islamic depredations against Christians in the Middle East (attacking/extorting pilgrims from outside of the MidEast, mistreating native Christians in the MidEast, plundering holy sites, carrying off relics, etc.) and the appeals of the Byzantine rulers (religious and secular) for help from Western Europe.

The result was amazing, to the point that the Islamics still live in fear of Romans and Crusaders.
