Charlemagne lived, what? 50 generations ago? Even accounting for genetic dead-ends who died as children, or in warfare, or infertile, two or so children per generation is an awful lot. In fact, several orders greater than the number of humans who have ever lived. Royal interbreeding can only account for so many offspring, and primogeniture can only benefit so many. Most Europeans, particularly in France, Britain, Germany, etc are almost certainly descended from all of his legitimate children as well as those who were born to Charlemagne's wives.

I don't know if I buy that everyone on every end of Europe descends from him. This was all based on a statistical guess anyways
