    Default A Syriac Gedmatch result!

From Aleppo, Syria. Equidistant between Levant and Anatolia, not that different from a regular northern Syrian actually. Anyway, Syriacs are they're own group and definitely not proper Assyrians as in Chaldean or Church of the East sense. Imo they are closer to Maronites, with whom they share the Western Syrian Rite as opposed to the Eastern Syrian Rite of Assyrians.

Not really though. "Syriacs" speak a version of Eastern Neo Aramaic and call themself "Suroyo", just like we Catholic and Nestorian Assyrians say "Suraya"(which means Assyrian). I've seen several gedmatch results of Syriac Orthodox Assyrians and they are indistinguishable from the rest of us. Syriacs in Syria and Lebanon nowadays are highly Arabized and mix with the local Christians so obviously this guy isn't 100% Assyrian.

Lol no. Both of the ones I posted are originally from Tur Abdin in Turkey. All Syriac Orthodox are originally from Turkey with the exception of a couple villages in Northern Iraq. The community in Syria is recent, after the genocide.

I've always wondered if Aleppine syriacs would cluster with Maronites or Assyrians. I know that they had close relations with the Mardini and Maslawi syriacs back in the Ottoman Empire days, as they all spoke arabic. Can you provide kit number?

From my experience, Levantine Syriacs tend to plot with their countries' Christian community, or with other minorities. For instance, I've seen a Palestinian Syriac from Bethelem plot with Samaritans.

Which calculator do you want me to post?

There's a NATIVE Syriac community stretching all the way from Aleppo to Bethelem, and they are mostly Catholic (like the op), not Orthodox. And they don't identify as Assyrian, just Syriac or Aramean. Another official name for the Syriac Catholic Church is Aramean Catholic Church. They identify as native Levantines, not with Mesopotamians.

"Syriac" is not the right word. That is the name of the language, not the people.
