    Default PBS: Visions of England

From the Cliffs of Dover to the magnificent stretch of the Thames River, from Stonehenge to Big Ben, Brighton, Bath - and beyond - VISIONS OF ENGLAND offers a tour of Southern England, the North Country and Midlands, and London as never before.

Annoying voice but pretty impressive landscapes and sometimes snippets of interesting information.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

I'm interested to hear what the English think about this American documentary of their country.

I can't watch it all at the moment, but the opening sequence featured the Union Flag (the flag of the United Kingdom) as opposed to the St George's Cross (the flag of England), so I've got one criticism before the documentary itself has even really started!

I'll watch it all and give my opinion on it this evening.

A little summary, appreciating that it was designed for an unfamiliar audience and that the makers had to condense a huge amount of information into a one hour timeslot.

    What I liked:

    • It featured some wonderful camera work and aerial shots. The scenery and landscapes were very well chosen.
    • I was quite impressed by the scope of the documentary and the amount of locations covered. I was glad that it didn't begin and end with London and its black cabs, Big Ben, double-decker buses etc.

    What I didn't like:

    • The stereotypical (from a non-native perspective) 'English' accent of the narrator. Not many people in England speak with a 'posh' accent anyway, and hardly anybody with that posh an accent! It was obviously chosen to give the programme some Englisher-than-England feel, but from the perspective of an Englander, it was hard to listen to at times.
    • The narrator claimed that Hadrian's Wall was built to keep out the Scots, which it wasn't - it was built as a defensive wall against the Picts. There were no Scots in Britain at that time.
    • Saint Thomas Becket is referred to as Saint Thomas á Becket! Why does this ahistorical inaccuracy persist?

Okay I would agree on discussing History about the Great British Empire. But what else is there to talk about Britain now? It is so racially mixed, dirty, poor and having no furture......How could you people have allowed yourselves to get so mixed? "Vision of England"? I though you people lost it after the German's lost the war...

Yeah I can literally not see England now because of the thick layer of darkies and tracksuit clad dole wallers. How great it could be if we where part of Hitler's Greater Deutschland.

Also, Fountains abbey looks nice from the air. Couldn't watch much of it due to the horrible forced sounding accent though so I skipped through it.
