I am starting off in Maine.


This could have been somewhere in England - Isn't: it's a street in Biddeford, Maine.

Maine (New England in general) is renowned for it's fiery autumn colours.

I am not sure about the rest but New England still looks pretty decent - almost European. Of course I am keeping myself to the countryside but the "fall" colours in Vermont are exquisite:

I haven't got a clue where this is.. but this is rather beautiful panorama - somewhere around a lake in Vermont.


One thing that has almost amazed me are those covered bridges. Surely we have them here (a couple of them left here and there) in parts of Europe but not like on the other side. This is the socalled Columbia Bridge over the Connecticut River between Columbia, New Hampshire and Lemington, Vermont.



Much of the business of local government in Vermont towns takes place each March at a town meeting held at a meetinghouse, such as this one in Marlboro, Vermont.

The only appreciable number of non-whites I'm aware of in Vermont and Maine are Somali refugees dumped in Lewiston and I believe Burlington. The architectural styles, especially the churches, are a testament to the simple preferences of the Puritan era.

Since I kind off appreciate New England I am going for another round.

The Old Constitution House at Windsor, where the Constitution of Vermont was adopted on July 8, 1777.


This apparently is the document involved: the Constitution of Vermont, signed on July 8, 1777.

Old Slater Mill on the Blackstone River in Rhode Island (it is an U.S. National Historic Landmark and is registered in theU.S. National Register of Historic Places.)



Park Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts is part of the "Freedom Trail" which is a historic landmark trail that leads through the city. So those interested in colonial history, that happen to be on the other side of the big pond and with more time on their hands: just follow the trail.

If anyone of you is going to cover the cities and historic sites: be my guest. I'll be for the most part focussed on the countryside.

Bunker Hill Monument, Charlestown, Massachusetts, 2009. No explanation regarding the monument should be required - and if any of you don't know what it is for: enroll in your local primary school.


The Connecticut River and Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. Looking south from Mt. Sugarloaf in Deerfield, toward the towns of Sunderland, Amherst and Whately. The buildings of the University of Massachusetts Amherst can be seen in the distance to the left, and farther off, the Holyoke range of mountains.


Textile mills such as the Boott Mills in Lowell made Massachusetts a leader in the US industrial revolution.
