Should English be the official language of the United States?

I say YES. Make it official. This should help to deter the "illegal friendly" atmosphere we have. Nothing more frustrating than when I call some place and they say press "1" for English- almost every service these days is this way. To become an American citizen, you must be fluent in English. Why would anyone want it any other way? We need to do this ASAP.

Yes, maybe some states would need co-officiality but I say yes for a national level.

Unfortunately, no. Some time in the 1980's there was a huge debate about this and to get legislation passed. But it didn't get picked up. So we really don't have an official language. Sad.

It wouldn't deter anything. If you want to deter illegal migration, more border security, more fencing, faster deportations, etc. Illegals in the USA do not become citizens, except rare circumstances. In order to become a citizen one has to pass a civics and an English test. One has to know English to become a citizen.

I read a news article a little while back about a European tourist who accidentally crossed the US-Canadian border while taking a beach walk. She was held and deported from the US and is banned from entering the US forever.

Yet it seems those poor uneducated people from the south (along with their children) purposely bypassing your immigration laws are more likely to get away with it. Something is very wrong there.

Not directly, of course. But when we don't have English as an official language, we are still sending a message that it's okay to not assimilate.
