In an international survey published March 2018, the British were found to be some of the least-welcoming people in the world towards expats. A study using nearly 13,000 expatriates found the United Kingdom to be among the globe's least-friendly nations. European and Western countries in general tended to do poorly in the assessment, with a two notable outliers. In the 65-country ranking, the ten friendliest European and Western nations were as follows:
1. Portugal
10. Canada
17. Spain
19. Romania
25. Malta
30. Ireland
31. New Zealand
32. Greece
35. The Netherlands
36. The United States
In contrast are the ten Western and European nations deemed most unfriendly by expatriates:
52. Russia
54. Poland
55. France
56. The United Kingdom
58. Hungary
60. Denmark
61. Finland
62. Czech Republic
63. Switzerland
64. Austria
Expats in Britain have complained of difficulty in making close friends, and many have a hard time feeling "at-home" in the country. One woman lamented that she has tried 'all kinds of nice, and nothing has worked'.
Ironically, some on the most scathing denunciations of the British people have come from Britain's close neighbors. French expats in particular have described the English as 'arrogant, unwelcoming, lacking a good sense of humour, and unfriendly', although they have more positive comments regarding the Scottish and Welsh. Italians rated the British as the second least-funny people in the world. One Italian tourist openly stated of the British:
"You have absolutely no sense of humour."
Britain's greatest praise came from fellow Anglo countries - the United States, Australia, and New Zealand - each of whom held the nation in high regard and marked it as a most desired tourist destination.
