Default Terms like "ethnic" and "exotic" to describe non-Europeans only

    What do you think?

As I said in another thread:

I find the term "exotic" when referring to people who aren't of European descent quite offensive, TBH.

It implies that Europeans are "boring" and "need enrichment", which is usually the mantra that the cultural Marxists push.

Also, using "ethnic" to describe that implies the same thing and is quite offensive. So they're "ethnic" but we're not? We have no right to exist as a people is that what they're saying?

Here Acadians would be considered exotic.

Here, Norwegians would not be considered exotic nor ethnic.

Like, if you go to a grocery store, there is an "ethnic food" section where you will find Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, African, and East Asian foods. Norwegian food is in the grocery store but is in the general section.

Actually I'm pretty sure I've seen that before. It's probably expensive as hell like other Norwegian products.

There aren't many here, though. You'd probably find more items in areas where there are a lot of people of Norwegian descent.

Yup it´s pretty irritating, but that´s just the way it is. Personally I didn´t feel all that "boring" when I was in Beijing and dozens of locals wanted to take pictures with me because apparently I looked "oh so exotic" to them. I myself don´t really see things that way when I meet people from the other side of the globe even when they might be a rather rare sight around here. They are just people, that´s it.

If anything I think Europeans should be considered exotic (and they are among non-anglo/westernized non-Europeans). What other region has such a frequency of light skin, hair and eyes and diversity of other features?

So I guess ultimately this is a non-issue actually. It just depends on the point of view. Naturally people will often see others more interesting than themselves. This is not just a European thing.

I have to say one of the saddest things I ever saw was on the 23andme community, there was a whole thread of people who were disappointed the got 100% European as a result, because they thought it was "boring".

I think the term "exotic" when used in anthropology does not carries a negative or possitive connotation; it just means a person has/might have foreign influences (or non-european influences) that makes him/her stand out from the rest of the native population slightly, being able to mix quite well with other locals at plain sight, but looking exotic under closer scrutiny.

On the western world, ethnic (food/music/customs) means non-european, a form of acknowledging minorities. That doesnt mean, at least to me, that europeans are getting the short end of the stick; it has a lot to do with where you are living.
