Redneck and Southern are NOT the same !

I see a lot of Euros talking about living in the Southern states and being rednecks , or how they want to be a redneck. This is not what redneck means. You can't be a redneck if you come from a fine old Southern family of amazing lineage and refinement. That would be like saying Queen Elizabeth 2 is a redneck! Rednecks are not exclusive to the South. They include all parts of the country. Upstate New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania ,etc all have more stereotypical rednecks than most of the South in many ways. A redneck in the pejorative is supposed to be a very low class bawdy person from a rural area. Country people are not rednecks either. Why is this becoming a thing? I blame Jeff Foxworthy.

Actually quite a high percentage of the original colonial Southern settlers descend from various noble lineages of Europe

Generally all it means is a Southerner from the States to somebody outside of the US, but where it was coined it has a more perjorative definition.
