Not really. The only reason they do that is to provide some platform for unity. And, "British" would mean very little without the English. If you think "British Empire", it really was the English Empire.

Regardless, outside of legal contexts, nobody native to Ireland is 'British.'

That's simply not true. English, Welsh, Scotch and Irish men and women were all completely integral to the British Empire which was over-seen by the mercantile class.
