    An interesting point. Pakis often define themselves as British, but never as English. So this has actually done us some good in the long run, as opposed to, say, Muslim immigrants in France who define themselves as French. British is not an ethnicity, it's a citizenship. Once the English throw it off, we can hopefully throw off the detritus of empire, such as the Pakis, too.

    They have never lived in Britain or Britannia, nor are they even arguably closely related to any of the peoples from Great Britain - genetically speaking, the Welsh, English, and Scots are all closer to each other than any single on of them is with the Irish.

    Historically, there has always been some sort of interaction and settlement on both sides of the Irish Sea, so genetically there is very little to distinguish an Irishman from a Brit. As a side note, on 23andme, many western Brits (Wales, NW England, SW England), including myself, sit in the Irish autosomal plot and not the English one.
