His mother was born in Hof, near the Czech border, according to geni.com. I can't find his father's birthplace.

Please excuse my ignorance but why does Y DNA matter so much when it comes to understanding ones genetics? I know it comes from the male line in the family but its my understanding that it doesn't tell much about someones overall ethnicity. What is the great value of it to someone who just wants to understand their background?
