In Western Europe too. Here too it would be considered worse than an insult. To take down a flag (particularly when commemorating soldiers) is the kind of behaviour that would be carried out by a force of occupation. No police, in their right mind would do that here.

In the Netherlands, we had a similar situation in 1951 when a Frisian man was taken to court and wanted to carry out his defense in his native language. It was declined and other Frisians had already been taken to court for writing in Frisian in 1948. This time it turned into a full-scale riot and people got beaten up outside the court house, this caused a firestorm up and down the country as the judge himself had been a Hollander (like someone from Tirana - arrogantly denying a Greek his trial in Greek). It got worse for the Dutch government when stories hit the news that prominent Frisian advocates and even teenage students that had protested had against the rulings had been arrested by the national security services. The result was a full-blown scandal and accusations that the Dutch government behaved like an occupation force (something much of the rest of the country had their own experiences with) The Dutch government, put under severe pressure, buckled. Frisian became a national language in '55 and in 1953 provinces were allowed to have their own flags again (which had been banned for a long time).

I understood what you meant "idiot" but that's because these forums have made you to believe certain areas look like this or that like there's purity&continuity in places.
