North Africans from the past weren't much different from modern ones. The idea they became mullatoes due to trans-saharan slave trade is ridiculous. Most of this bullshit derived from these outdated GEDmatch calculators which lack Iberomaurusian references and were giving near 30% SSA for many North Africans and 5% for some Galicians and Asturians. Bullshit.

If you model them with Iberomaurusian the SSA is considerably lower, generally around 10%. Coastal North Africans indeed have and always had real SSA in the 5%-15% range, but they are not in Brazilian pardo range (20%+) as we believed.

Ancient Iberomaurusians were a mix of Dzudzuana-type of ancestry and some kind of basal African related to basal Eurasian that isn't necessarily ''SSA'', even if modern SSAs have it as well.

In short, ancient North Africans likely had around 10% real Sub-Saharan on average and modern North Africans are generally in the same range, with exception of Southern NA groups which indeed have anything in between 20-40% SSA.

Ah, and just because some ancient Egyptian samples are less SSA than modern Egyptians it doesn't mean SSA ancestry was low among Egyptians. Considering that Egyptian culture developed in many regions of Upper Egypt and Egypt was unified from the South it makes very likely a situation in which many Egyptians had some Sub-Saharan admixture.

I'm not saying they were blacks, full-blown West Africans, but I'm pretty sure future samples will show SSA admixture in Ancient Egyptians, at least comparable to modern Egyptians. Egypt was at the crossroads of West Asia, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, it's likely that some were SSA admixed. We even know of Nubian Pharaohs.
