Moldovans or Moldavians (original name: Moldoveni; Молдовень in the Moldovan Cyrillic script used nowadays only in Transnistria) are the native population of the medieval Principality of Moldavia, which nowadays corresponds to 8 north-eastern counties of Romania (out of 41), the Republic of Moldova, and small parts of Ukraine (namely, the Chernivtsi oblast and Budjak). There is an ongoing political controversy inside as well as outside the Republic of Moldova as to whether Moldovans constitute a part of the Romanian nation, or whether they form a separate ethnic group.
