I disagree. Russian and Ukrainian languages are almost the same grammatically and they share a lot of vocabulary. So, even if they in Ukrainian news now try to chose words that are different from Russian ones, a good share of words are still the same.
I've never learnt Ukrainian purposefully, but I understand some mostly thanks to my watching an Ukrainian humoristic show Faina Ukraina (it's not the one where used to star their current president, lol).
I think if you know Russian well, you already know most of Ukrainian (just pick a few hundreds of words and you're there). And if you know Russian and Polish well, you already know Ukrainian pretty well too.
