My surname is most common throughout Scotland, in Northern Ireland and in the North East of England. Outside of the British Isles, it is reasonably common in the US, Canada and Australia, and very common in New Zealand for some reason. I guess a larger number of people of their must have Scottish blood. The exact locations in Britain where my name is my most common are the Scottish Borders (likely because of Clan Scott, a border reiver clan), Perthshire and Northumberland.
My mother's maiden name is also really only a English name, really found only in Britain or in ex-British colonies. In Britain it is common in the South of England, particularly in counties by the Welsh border, which also happens to be the area where my mother is from.
