To a large degree, yes, but consider that the Netherlands, for example, only decriminalized homosexuality when Napoleon invaded and imposed the Napoleonic Code on them.

There are no doubt foreign influences, and while countries should resist them (if they can), they're still there.

I thought about including non-European, non-Western states, but I opted to keep this in-house. The Ottomans though would be a prime candidate for stunting the Balkans, for example. China's rise is causing our decline as we speak.

I voted none. The first so far in to it. I believe that the cause might be blamed upon any particular country, for any number or particular reasons, at any particular point in time.

Seems that if the west declines then another area rises, so we might well look in that direction.
