Now you know even the date when it arrived.
My guess it's rare probably because is just a variant of other surnames in Calabria like Garopolo, Garopoli, Garipolo... Many surnames have disappeared from South Italy over the past 100 years because of diaspora. Of course it could be also a more recent arrival.

There is a frazione (hamlet) within the town of San Pietro di Carida' called Garopoli. I can assume that's what his surname is derived from.
