Default Do perfect grades denote intelligence? Is this a society of smart idiots?

Some of the most educated, high-income people I've met in life didn't and don't impress me on an overall-intelligence or common sense and maturity level in the slightest. Sometimes (99.9%) I feel as if were it not for these individuals socioeconomic class privileges in life they'd never be anywhere near the position they are.

Curious what others feel on the subject. Is society dominated by simpleton, mental-conformist types with no actual depth?

EDIT: YES means you think we do live in a society of powerful morons via class-based benevolence. The other is that you disagree with this and believe they are actually largely worthy.

    Consider this.

I just got done talking to a very gorgeous blonde university graduate who was absolutely obsessed with Ashton Kutcher. Now I don't give a damn about Ashton Kutcher, my point is this. She LIKED Ashton Kutcher simply because of this movie. Now note this and stare at the picture for a minute until the sick reality hits you.

She liked someone simply because she wants to see a movie that seems to depict her. I'm talking this was a 5 minute rant about the wonders of Ashton Kutcher. Now I won't see this movie. But I think any 10% sane individual can tell it will suck x500. She literally was a complete consumerist in every sense. She based her like of someone completely off a movies directive, and a bad shitty social engineering one at that. We are dealing with zombies in my opinion.

Look at many university graduates today. They are educated, but only by the standards that were set forth by that institution. Of course, they are all smart idiots.

The phrasing of the poll question deserves a C- for its lack of logic.

Well Austin, no doubt there are individuals like you describe. But research has associated a whole host of positive behaviors and outcomes with I.Q. - high I.Q. people eat better, drive safer, divorce less, abuse drugs and alcohol less, are taller(!), and even live longer. So I dunno.

It does seem like a lot of educated people have stupid opinions - but ultimately, liking Ashton Kutcher doesn't necessarily mean that someone can't run their life.

I'm saying a lot of educated people have no substance to them at all. There is nothing there. What I'm implying is high IQ is not necessarily a quality of those with perfect grades. It seems to me that many with perfect grades are simply drone-like, systematic beneficiaries almost. I've met plenty of people with perfect grades who can easily be bested by the latest intern from high school running the printer.

Okay. Thought you had typed "ruin" instead of "run". Misread.

Anyways yeah. I agree with that that yes, obviously liking Ashton Kutcher is irrelevant. I don't care about that or whoever she likes movie-star wise. The point is she based a whole range of emotions and interest purely off a 3 minute commercial she saw on this movie.

Now let me give you the reality of this woman. She's a single mom who basically ruined her life male-prospect-wise by having three kids while being under 25. So she is the stereotypical entity of which I speak. Super upper-class, trust fund, PERFECT grades from tier 1 university, and good job (70k+ at 24).

She is an EXACT class-based beneficiary of a system that rewards the "smart idiot" so to speak.

Would you call her, knowing the above about her, smart? I don't think so...

I certainly wouldn't call someone with a 70k job, single under 25 mother who has 3 under-age-2 kids a "high IQ" individual. She is purely a degenerate beneficiary of the system.

By the way her 70k is from her fathers business (he supplements her income/job out of pity/love) so in reality she'd make more like 30k a year without his benevolence due to her situation.

Perhaps you cannot comprehend it. It's a trap for a certain type so to speak. (:

I strangely find myself agreeing with Austin in this matter, good grades and formal education do not denote intelligence for me either.

At least some basic level of intelligence is needed, of course, to make it through college.
But in Greece, for example, the educational system is made in such a way, that it all depends on memorization and not critical thinking.

It depends, to me good grades don't mean much. I have met many idiots with degrees, 95% of them among the upper classes.

The bigger your talent is, the bigger is your laziness
Perfect grades don't mean that you are necessarilly intelligent. Most of the people who are really clever are lazy and they aren't interested in the grades, just because they know they can achieve them if they want.

No they dont. Its obvious. As much as we try (or not) to be correct and honest, as we, students, have preferences for teachers, teachers also have preferences for their students. The worst is that everytime they want to praise their fave student, they hurt the others.

This happened to me several times in last year of high school. We needed to get top marks to get into a good Uni...so we all were kinda desperate. The daughter of our mayoress was my mate and she was a normal girl, not brilliant at all (always partying and she knew shit about our lessons), but lol, she always managed to get top marks,...feels like shit and pretty frustrated when you study, do your projects and stuff...you get average-high marks and the other one does nothing and get top marks. I went pretty mad on that school and moved, but yeah, same story in the other with some other character.

Ridiculous. Since then, I dont believe in top marks, never again.
