Default Double standard regarding Iberians and their former colonies, versus other Europeans.

No one in their right mind, would ever call a Haitian "French", a Jamaican "British", or someone from Suriname "Dutch". Most people wouldn't even associate Haiti with France offhand, nor would they make the ignorant assumption that if you go to France, it will resemble Haiti. For some reason, the prestigious European status of these other former colonial powers is never contested and never debated.

However, unfortunately, Spaniards and Portuguese still bear the burden of their colonial actions. Too many people wrongly attribute everything of Mexico, Cuba, and Bolivia for instance to Spain, referring to them as "Spanish" just as often as their own ethnicity. I've complained about this many times.. the general ambiguity between Latin America and Iberia, and the ignorant assumptions people make (that you find people wearing sombreros in Spain and making tacos and tortillas, while thinking that flamenco is danced in Mexico).

The question is, WHY is this? Why don't Portugal and Spain get the respect they deserve? How did this bullshit even start becoming accepted?

The only Spanish speakers I know of look like this man (I live in California & yes I know California was once a part of the Spanish territories of North America):

    A Mexican yakuza.

Also to add, to many people, "Spanish music" is mariachi, salsa, etc, tacos are "Spanish food", samba is "Portuguese" etc. Yet reggae music is never seen as "British". Why does this important distinction seem to be made with everyone else but Iberians?

Because some Mexicans still think that they belong to Spain or Spain belongs to them in a way or another and gives a bad name and reputation to both countries.

Because of centuries of propaganda (hollywood, media, etc) by the USA/British/French, associating Latin-America as something similar to Spain, and creating a fake meta-ethnicities such as Hispanic and Latino.

I had a nice chat in the chat box with some Spanish posters today. They weren't rude & stupid like Mexicans are. I don't like Chinese, Mexicans & Muslims. Also blacks make me nervous. Anyways do the Mexicans try to claim to be Spanish but what are they like? Are they just Spanish speaking Native Americans?

They are mostly extremist Mestizos. In one hand you have the "La raza" Brownpriders who hates Spain and Europe in general, and in the other hand you have the Nazi Mestizo, who thinks is a pure breed of Spanish blood or another fancy European country like France.
They inferiority complexes are very extreme, and is not rare for them to have flip-flops, switching from being ' White Priders ' to ' Brown Priders ' or viceversa.

    Hellhammer,

I have seen these "la raza" Mexicans before. They aren't liked very well by the Tea Party patriots & they can get into fights very easily. I've seen a couple of these encounters when some protesting Mexicans meet some counter protesting Americans & the results aren't always pretty to see unless the police officers are around. The Tea Party patriots as they call themselves aren't all "angry white men" & I've seen blacks and Asians in the groups; California is being filled with a flood of Mexicans, many people are angry about it but nobody is doing anything.

Sadly that kind of encounters only gonna increase with the time due the intense illegal immigration and high birth-rates of Mexican-Americans in the US. On a side note, real Mexicans (those who live in Mexico) dislike Mexican-Americans very much.

    It's an US American thing.
