No one in their right mind, would ever call a Haitian "French", a Jamaican "British", or someone from Suriname "Dutch". Most people wouldn't even associate Haiti with France offhand, nor would they make the ignorant assumption that if you go to France, it will resemble Haiti. For some reason, the prestigious European status of these other former colonial powers is never contested and never debated.
However, unfortunately, Spaniards and Portuguese still bear the burden of their colonial actions. Too many people wrongly attribute everything of Mexico, Cuba, and Bolivia for instance to Spain, referring to them as "Spanish" just as often as their own ethnicity. I've complained about this many times.. the general ambiguity between Latin America and Iberia, and the ignorant assumptions people make (that you find people wearing sombreros in Spain and making tacos and tortillas, while thinking that flamenco is danced in Mexico).
The question is, WHY is this? Why don't Portugal and Spain get the respect they deserve? How did this bullshit even start becoming accepted?![]()
