I thought it obvious that the OP intended for us to infer that multiculturalism, in this context, includes multiracialism.

Haven't most recent events in Europe clearly shown that multiculturism doesn't work?

Multiculturalism is part of the problem today. We have so much problems in this era thanks to this term. People that are mixed till this day have a problem with identity. Africans,Europeans and Asians have different cultures that should never mix.

Multiculturalism, as I always say, only works if all the cultures within it are great, i.e. Switzerland. But when the "multiculturalism" is the incorporating of third world cultures in with civilized ones, this cannot be great.

I am one to believe in multiculturalism as a possiblity; I lived it. In the military bases everyone interacts, we have all of the U.S.'s colonial outpost represented and many people are so mixed ma TA users would probably smoulder into ashes, so heated to see so much interaction.

However the main difference is that although these people are from differenct cultures for most of the town's history we had no slums, ghettos, or projects. People interacted with everyone on their block and we were and still are the most prosperous city in or county. There may be some traditionalists but it is always said "You are an American", even if you didn't mix and have kids atleast they have a U.N. looking birthday part

Things are changing however; poorer more isolated people aer coming from the part of the County and region in the East Bay, farm workers and those in the lower part of the service industry are having kids who are now teenagers and young adults who did not get the interaction I had.

A diaspora is leaving SF and Oakland as people buy their foreclosed homes and they are coming up the town southwest from us (once best place to live in our county) and its gotten dangerous. So people with money flee to the gated communties and the fringe of town creating a big "hood".

Even though different people interact still; socio-economically they do not and this is when things fail. There is suspicion and tension on both sides that I don't think will subside in the near future.

    This is when things fail.

Now mind you many people with money are are non-white, part-white children, or are from a time when there was more cross-cultural interaction. Although there may be a multitude of colors among them it is rather mono-cultural that is Suburban Culture and things are put in a black-white dicotomy figuratively and literally (I was "white" among my friends even though clearly I am not white, many "black" kids are mixed and even though it is acknowledged they still are in that caste.)

I am not saying blame poor people, I am saying that the interactions have changed with fear. We have the largest police force in the county, they have progressively been targeting more and more new comers, have confused us for them and there is tension.

I am not sure how this cam be fixed except just having people hangout with other folks not like themselves and know folks again. But people seem set in new ways.

I want to say yes but I don't see it anymore; yes there are many face but rather one public culture with upper middle class and above youths and I want to say no but among the lower classes you have many facecs and cultures interacting together. These two groups just are into eachother.

    A paradox I guess

I would go so far as to say third world countries can't be in the same space as say Denmark but I would say two main groups; hard working, forward thinking, culturally intact persons and family along with the Bougouise could. Those who are from degerenative aspects of a given culture no matter which culture will cause problems.

Multiculturalism will always fail.People from other cultures and backgrounds will always put their thoughts and beliefs before others. But of course you are a mix so of course you are not 100% against it..

Singapore has been around for generations and is an example of a working multiculturalism.

I also live in a pred. Chinese community and we're multicultural. It seems to work as far as I can tell.

Yes I do, I used to live in one in South Florida, and it was very interesting to see people of all ethnic groups and races interacting with each other. There where some conflicts off course with some trouble makers, but it was rare to see. I have observed that people who want to isolate themselves from the rest of humanity usually suffer from ignorant anti social behavior and unreasonable hatred towards others.

From what I have come to learn from your posts your from South Western British Columbia and if I know anything about that its alot of Hong Kongers with money moved over there when HK was returned to the PRC; would you say economics of the group and the trade relations between you Province and the Pacific Rim has quelled racial tension?
