I don't know the situation were you are, but here, it is as serious as a heart attack. The implementation of austerity onto the citizens for want of bailing out the too-big-to-fails and special interests is going to have enormous economic, political, and social backlash. Not just for Americans, but world-wide. If you thought Greece was bad, wait until you see the U.S and likewise all of North America in the coming months.
"Free, do you call yourself? Then I would hear your ruling thought, and not merely that you have escaped from a yoke. Are you one of those who had the right to escape from a yoke? Many a one has cast away his last worth when he has cast away his servitude. Free from what? What does that matter to Zarathustra! But your fiery eyes should tell me: free for what?" - Thus Spoke Zarathustra

Stuck in Ohio for at least another 2 years, once I'm free here first place I'm going is back to Tennessee, the state I never wanted to leave in the first place. If the apocalypse comes before that 2 years I'd drop everything in a heart beat to find transportation back to Tennessee. Overton County still has vast natural resource especially in the Standing Stone State Park and Dale Hollow areas (all parks and lakes were created from land seized by the government from my ancestors) so I'd return there to settle the score.

I'd like to hear from people who have actually lived through collapses. Those in the Balkans and in Argentina might have some experiences that would help North Americans plan more realistically. I doubt, for example, that the strategy of sitting on hoards in total isolation is the way to go, but rather improved community solidarity and cooperation. Also, these countries that experienced such crises did rebound.

Also I don't plan on sitting on a hoard for long. I plan on capitalizing and reinvesting in order to continue to survive in relative comfort. This includes more rations, survival gear, and hunting accessories like .22 ammunition should the need arise.
It should be emphasised that your relationship with your neighbours and friends are going to be put to the test. If you have beef with them, now would be a good time to extend a friendly gesture to foster good relations.
