I dont think that they represent average dominican people of 1960. They are predominantly european and more european by far than nowadays dominicans. They are probably from hight class. Even in La Habana which sufered a Detroitization, with black masive inmigration, and White masive emigration, you find nowadays many more whites and prodominantly europeans than in Dominican Republic. Then it is imposible a racial change from people of the photos in 1930-1940-1950 to nowadays dominicans without a masive inmigration. I dont think that 90% of dominican mulatos and dominican blacks are inmigrants from Haití or anglocaribean islands. Their ancestors were also in Dominican Republic in 1930-1940-1950.

Depends on the city and various barrios. Plenty of photos from that era with lots of mulattos and darker people.

As it relates to dictators many were much worse than Trujillo. He invested heavily in infrastructure and modernized the DR. He also enriched himself, had many people killed. He encouraged trade and business, especially with the US. He gave some WWll Jewish refugees a bunch of hard scrabble land on the North Coast and those people built Sosua, and that is why he did it. The Mayor of Sosua today is "Nueman". He is often remembered for the murders of the Mirabal sisters.

One thing the government should do is pay police much more. I read somewhere that the Attorney General (whatever they call it there) is worth like 40 Million. Based on his salary he should have a net worth of 600K. I think Oderbrecht was a huge cash cow of bribery for many in the DR.
